A figure stands at the midpoint between the cave’s mouth and the world beyond. The philosopher, robed in a toga, pours water back and forth between two golden vessels—one illuminated by the cave’s ruddy firelight, the other catching the radiance of the sun. Role in the Journey

Temperance is the vision from the high place: every level of reality, from shadow to sun, understood in order and unity. You hold together the material and the ideal, and learn to move deliberately along the divided line. The mature soul integrates all, without being mastered by any one part.
